
The Preamble of our Constitution is very specific:
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/
This beginning statement points out just what our founding fathers intended for our government. They wanted a just government that had the welfare of citizens in mind. It highlighted the necessity of Liberty and the importance of defending our freedom. With this in mind, they put together a system of government meant to do just that, and those elected to implement this system were to be public servants, elected by the people that they would swear to represent.
These were wise men, who knew the danger of tyranny, so they put together a triad of governance. The Executive in the Presidency, the Congress for lawmaking and dispersing funding and collecting taxes, and the Judicial branch, all which were to be checks on one another. They put together a relatively simple, but highly functional system of governance, with a Constitution delineating what powers each branch has, what powers the states have, and most necessarily, what powers government does not have. The rights of the individual were paramount to their thinking.
With the Democrats now running 2 out of 3 branches of government, it seems that the Constitution no longer matters. Congress has started their new session with HR 1, a bill that would enshrine every bad practice experienced in battle ground state voting in the past national election by making those bad practices the law of the land. This bill is a total mess, and it is getting even messier as S 1, the Senate version of the house bill. Congress has also threatened to “pack” the Supreme Court, because they believe that the current membership leans conservative and they want that to be rectified with new liberal judges that will not offer a check on their power grab. The mere threat has effectively neutered the Supreme Court as a check on the balance of power, as the current Supreme Court Judges are treading lightly on what they will hear in their purview. The Congress also had one last fling with past-President Trump, impeaching him in the House and having a Senate “show trial” without witnesses or any real evidence. That went no-where, but was their parting shot with “The Donald” who had the audacity to point out their corruption for all to see. Joe Biden started his tenure with equal enthusiasm. So far, Biden has signed more than 50 executive actions in less than 2 months, 22 of which are direct reversals of Trump’s policies. Most of these actions have addressed the CCP coronavirus, immigration and equity. Now he has mandated masking on all Federal properties, open borders once again, reviving “catch and release”, and a flurry of orders granting special rights to outside the mainstream groups, with one example of transgenders being able to compete in collegiate sports alongside of women. Public servants are who these elected officials are supposed to be. They are there to promote our liberty, our prosperity, and our tranquility. It is evident that they do not take their “mission statement” seriously. Instead, they are acting like Royalty, with the thought that it is we, the citizens of America that owe them allegiance. They have elevated themselves to being our King and princes, with us in their servitude. We, the people, are now on dangerous ground, and we need strong leadership to once again find our way back to being a constitutional Republic. Benjamin Franklin worried about getting to this place: “Franklin was walking out of Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention in 1787, when someone shouted out, “Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?”
To which Franklin responded, with a rejoinder at once witty and ominous: “A republic, if you can keep it.” It is up to us. We fight to keep it, or tyranny wins. Which will it be patriots?
